Now I love the silly season, who doesn’t! But it’s called the silly season for a reason. It can not only make you eat silly non-nourishing food but make you feel pretty weighed down by all the heavy meals and constant snacking.
But if you are anything like me you don’t want to miss out on all the yummy food, but you also don’t want to end the year feeling sluggish and overstuffed.
Instead of skipping the parties or feeling guilty for indulging, find a way to enjoy yourself by making smart food choices, that way you won’t feel deprived!
Why should you care? Because the holidays are about enjoying good food and company, but that doesn’t mean you have to throw your healthy habits out the window. With a little planning, you can indulge in the treats you love without the post-party bloating or energy crashes.
Here are some simple tips to keep you feeling good all season long:
Pre-party snacks: Before heading out to a holiday party, have a healthy snack at home. A handful of almonds, a piece of fruit, or a yogurt can help curb your hunger so you’re not starving when you arrive, reducing the temptation to overeat and demolish the charcuterie board.
Balance your plate: At parties, go for a little bit of everything—but focus on balance. Fill your plate with lean proteins, veggies, and a few of your favourite indulgences. It’s all about mixing the good stuff with the treats. It’ll also balance your blood sugar levels which means you won’t be hungry later.
Snack smart: When it comes to snacking throughout the day, choose nutrient-dense options like veggie sticks, hummus, nuts, or whole grain crackers. This will help you stay satisfied and prevent you from reaching for sugary snacks later. Yes, I know it sounds boring, but it’ll also balance your moods so you and everyone around you can enjoy the day!
Time your treats: If you know you’re going to a big dinner, keep the snacks light during the day. That way, you’ll enjoy the main event without feeling too full or sluggish from grazing all day.
Stay hydrated: It’s easy to mistake thirst for hunger, especially during the holidays when drinks are flowing. Keep a glass of water nearby, and sip throughout the day to help with digestion and keep your energy up. It’ll also help with being tired and cranky the next day if you are one to drink a little too many festive drinks!
Listening to your body and eating mindfully is key to staying energised during the holiday season. When you nourish your body with balanced meals and satisfying snacks, you’re not only keeping your body happy but your brain happy too, and a happy brain is less likely to sabotage your healthy habits!
By allowing yourself to enjoy festive treats in moderation while focusing on foods that fuel you, you’re sending your brain the message that there’s no need to panic or overeat. The result? You feel lighter, more energised, and fully ready to enjoy all the holiday fun without guilt or overindulgence!
