Why You Need Healthy Fats When You Eat Clean!
If you have been reading some of my posts and decided to clean up your diet by eating clean, you’ll need to incorporate some healthy fats into your eating plan.
I’m not talking about the unhealthy fats like saturated and trans fats found in cakes, pies and most processed foods but important clean fats.
I’m talking about healthy fats that we need in our life to help absorb nutrients, provide satiety when we eat a meal and support hormonal health.
Did you know we have two very important hormones that help govern our appetite? Healthy fats play a major role in influencing these two hormones.
Leptin is a hormone made by fat cells that decreases your appetite.
Whilst ghrelin is a hormone that increases appetite.
These two hormones can determine just how satisfied you feel after a meal. Hence if you feel full and satisfied once you have finished your meal you are less likely to reach for non-nutritious foods that are not considered clean foods later on in the day.
Foods rich in healthy fats include avocados, extra-virgin olive oil, sardines and other oily fish.
Healthy oils are a really easy way to incorporate good fats into your diet, by drizzling on salads and roasting your vegetables.
Note: Avoid cooking with oils including polyunsaturated fats like corn, peanut and sunflower oils as they are highly processed and inflammatory.
Fish like salmon and trout are particularly good because they are packed full of omega-3 fats, which are anti-inflammatory. They also promote heart and brain health.
Snacking on a couple of Brazil nuts, walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds and chia seeds are great plant-based fat.
Sprinkle seeds and nuts over your salads, include them in your morning porridge or simply take a small handful in your bag whilst on the run for a snack later on.
Eating clean benefits your body and mind. Appreciating the simple things in life can make a meal go from boring to enjoyable!
